Gate valve

Also called: sluice valve, main shut-off valve, isolation gate valve

A gate valve is a full-bore isolation valve that works by raising or lowering a solid gate across the pipe: fully open it barely restricts flow, fully closed it stops the supply. That makes it the classic choice for a main or branch shut-off where you want minimal pressure loss when it's open. Its weakness matters in older Dubai buildings: a gate valve that's sat open and untouched for years often seizes or fails to seal fully when you finally need it, and the stem can corrode with the hard water here — which is why a stuck main valve is a common find behind low or patchy water pressure. For frequently-used isolation, a quarter-turn ball valve (which also tells you at a glance whether it's open or shut) is usually the better fit. If a gate valve won't fully open, won't seal, or weeps at the stem, it's a replacement rather than a repair — a quick job for a licensed plumber.
