Aluminium & Glass Work

Low-E glass

Also called: low-emissivity glass, low e glass, solar control glass

Low-E (low-emissivity) glass has a microscopically thin, invisible metallic coating that reflects radiant heat while still letting light through. In the UAE its job is to cut solar heat gain — it bounces a large share of the sun's heat back outside, so rooms stay cooler and the AC works less, without the glass looking dark or heavily tinted. It's usually part of a double-glazed (insulated) unit, with the coating facing the sealed cavity. Low-E is about thermal performance, which is a different thing from safety glass such as toughened or laminated (that's about strength and how it breaks) — a unit can be both. For specifying or replacing glazing to cut heat, a glass and glazing specialist can advise on the right coating and unit build-up.
