R-value
Also called: thermal resistance, insulation rating, r value
R-value is the measure of how well a material resists the flow of heat — the higher the number, the more it insulates. It comes up most in Dubai around AC pipe insulation, duct lagging, and wall or roof insulation, where the whole point is to keep heat (and its partner, condensation) on the right side of a surface. A chilled-water or refrigerant pipe wrapped in thin, compressed or waterlogged insulation has a low R-value, so heat leaks in and the pipe surface drops below the dew point — it sweats, drips and grows mould while the system works harder for less cooling. Two things quietly wreck R-value here: moisture (wet insulation barely insulates, which is why a sealed vapour barrier matters in humid air) and compression or gaps (squashed or missing lagging has almost no R-value at all). It's the same principle as a thermal break built into a window frame — a deliberate barrier to heat flow. Independent bodies like Rockwool publish the R-values of insulation materials, but the number only holds if the insulation is the right thickness, dry and continuous — which is the real job of proper AC pipe insulation rather than a token wrap.
