Static pressure (AC airflow resistance)

Also called: static pressure, external static pressure, esp, airflow resistance, duct static

Static pressure is the resistance to airflow inside an air-conditioning system — the sum of what the blower has to push against as it moves air through the filter, ducts, coil and grilles. Every AC blower is designed to move its rated airflow against a certain design static pressure; push that resistance too high and the airflow drops below what the coil needs. That's exactly how a too-fine or clogged filter, undersized or crushed ducts, or a blocked return quietly wreck cooling: less air over the cold coil means weak cooling, a straining blower, and a coil that can get so cold it freezes into ice — which chokes airflow further. It's the mechanism behind 'I fitted a better filter and now it cools worse'. The fix is to keep resistance sensible — right-sized filter (MERV matched to the system), clean filters and coils, and adequately-sized ductwork — so the system can actually breathe. Diagnosing high static pressure is part of a proper AC service.
