Tile adhesive types — cement, flexible or epoxy? Does it actually matter which is used?
I'm having tiling done and the quotes mention different adhesives — standard cement, "flexible", and epoxy.
- Does the tile adhesive actually matter, and which for what — large-format, porcelain, wet areas, over underfloor heating, outdoors?
- I've heard the wrong adhesive is why tiles debond and go hollow.
Trying to make sure the right adhesive is used so my tiles don't lift. What's the deal?

Short answer: YES, the adhesive matters a lot — it's a big reason tiles debond, go hollow or lift, and matching it to the tile, surface and area is what makes the floor last. Roughly: standard CEMENT adhesive is the basic option, fine for small ceramic tiles on stable indoor walls/floors — but it's not the right choice for demanding jobs. FLEXIBLE (polymer-modified) cement adhesive is the workhorse for the UAE: it's essential for POROUS-BACKED large-format tiles, PORCELAIN (dense, low-absorption tiles that ordinary cement grips poorly), WET AREAS, over UNDERFLOOR HEATING, and anywhere there's movement/temperature change (it flexes instead of cracking). EPOXY adhesive is the toughest/most chemical- and water-resistant, for heavy-duty, industrial, or specific demanding installs. Get the SPEC right and the coverage right — and the wrong (too-basic) adhesive is exactly what causes the hollow, lifting tiles.
The types (what each is for): - Standard cement-based adhesive: the basic mix — OK for small ceramic tiles on sound, stable, dry indoor surfaces. Not for large-format, porcelain, wet, outdoor, or moving substrates. - Flexible / polymer-modified cement adhesive (the UAE workhorse): modified for grip and flexibility. Use it for: - Large-format tiles (need strong bond + full coverage), - Porcelain (dense, low water absorption — ordinary cement bonds poorly to it), - Wet areas (bathrooms, over waterproofing), - Underfloor heating and anywhere with thermal movement (it flexes), - Timber/less-stable substrates. This is the right default for most modern jobs here. - Epoxy adhesive: strongest, most water/chemical resistant, non-porous — for heavy-duty, industrial, commercial-wet, or specialist installs (and often paired with epoxy grout). Pricier and harder to work.
Why the wrong one debonds tiles: - Too-basic adhesive under porcelain/large-format doesn't grip properly → the tile debonds and sounds hollow, then cracks/lifts. - Poor coverage (dabs instead of a proper notched full bed, no back-buttering on big tiles) leaves voids → hollow spots and weak bond, whatever the adhesive. - Wrong adhesive for movement/heat/wet → it can't cope and lets go.
Common mistake: using cheap standard adhesive under porcelain or large-format to save money — the classic cause of hollow, lifting tiles you pay to redo. Match the adhesive to the tile + surface + area (flexible for porcelain/large-format/wet/UFH), insist on full coverage, and let a tiling specialist match the adhesive to the job. Learned this when our large-format porcelain went hollow in patches — the tiler had used a basic adhesive and poor coverage, and porcelain barely grips to standard cement. Redone with a proper flexible adhesive, back-buttered, full coverage, and it's been solid and silent. The adhesive really is not the place to save money, especially with porcelain and big tiles. Ask specifically what adhesive they're using and insist on flexible for porcelain/large-format/wet areas. Coverage matters as much as the product — dabs leave voids that go hollow. It's invisible once tiled, so get it right first time.
Good to know flexible is the default for porcelain and wet areas — I'd assumed adhesive was just adhesive. The underfloor-heating point is one I'll flag too since we're doing UFH; apparently it needs flexible so it copes with the heat cycling without cracking the bond. And the full-coverage/back-buttering on big tiles is the bit that's easy for a rushed tiler to skip. Epoxy sounds like overkill for a home but good for the really heavy-duty stuff. Basically: don't let anyone put cheap cement under porcelain or large-format, and check the coverage. Cheap adhesive is a false economy you hear underfoot.
