Heavy shelves and a wall cabinet keep coming loose from the wall — what fixings actually hold in hollow block?

I've had two shelves and a wall cabinet come loose in my townhouse — one pulled a chunk of the wall with it. When I drilled, some spots felt solid and some felt hollow and crumbly behind a thin skin, so I clearly used the wrong plugs.

How do I tell what my walls are actually made of, and what fixings genuinely hold heavy things in a hollow wall versus a solid one? I'd like to avoid another crash (and another patch-and-repaint).

You've basically diagnosed it yourself — the fixing has to match the wall, and "hollow and crumbly behind a thin skin" is the classic hollow concrete block (or a gypsum/drywall partition) that most Dubai interiors use. A standard tapered plastic plug just spins or pulls straight back out of the void.

First, identify the wall — tap along it: - Sharp hollow sound = drywall/gypsum partition (you'll hit timber or metal studs every ~40-60cm). - Duller hollow with a hard-ish face = hollow concrete block (thin solid face, then a void, then webs). - Completely dead, dull sound = solid concrete or solid block — the easy case.

Then match the fixing: - Solid concrete/block: a good sleeve or expansion anchor (or a quality frame fixing) with a long enough screw. Drill clean and don't oversize the hole. - Hollow block: you need a fixing that grips the *back* of the face shell or spreads into the web — nylon cavity anchors for lighter loads, metal toggle/spring anchors or purpose-made hollow-block frame anchors for heavier ones. - Drywall: hit the studs where you can; between studs use spring toggles or heavy-duty metal cavity anchors.

For anything genuinely heavy — a full wall cabinet, a TV, a loaded bookshelf — don't trust the block face at all: fix a timber batten or rail across two or more solid points and hang off that so the load is spread. Match the anchor's rated load to the weight with a big safety margin, use more fixings than you think you need, and set the drill right (hammer for block, rotary-only for drywall so you don't blow out the hole).

If it's a heavy cabinet or you're not sure what's behind the wall (pipes, conduit), it's genuinely worth having a handyman in Dubai do it — the right anchors plus a quick stud-and-pipe check cost far less than another wall repair.

One practical add: buy the fixings for the worst case, not the average. In hollow block the weak point is that thin face shell, so the anchor has to carry the load back to the web behind it. Manufacturers like fischer publish load tables by anchor type and base material, and they're worth a two-minute look before you buy — a correctly-rated anchor saves the repaint when a cheap one lets go. And always check for buried water pipes and electrical conduit before you drill; a cheap cable/pipe detector pays for itself the first time.
