Custom glass tabletop / shelf — what glass, thickness and safety, and can it be made to size?
I want a custom glass tabletop (and a couple of glass shelves) cut to size — to protect a wood table and for a display unit.
- What thickness and type of glass — does it need to be toughened/safety glass?
- How are the edges finished?
- Can they cut it to any shape with cut-outs?
Trying to order the right glass rather than something that chips, scratches or isn't safe. What should I ask for?

Short answer: for a glass tabletop or shelf, get it TOUGHENED (safety) glass in a sensible THICKNESS for the span and use, with POLISHED edges, cut to your exact size/shape — a specialist templates it, cuts and drills any shape/cut-outs BEFORE toughening (toughened glass can't be cut afterwards), then toughens and polishes. Toughened is important for anything people touch or that spans/supports load: it's much stronger and, if it ever breaks, shatters into small blunt granules rather than dangerous shards. Thickness depends on size and use — a protective topper over a solid table can be thinner than a large unsupported table or a shelf carrying weight, where you go thicker (and consider the support/brackets). For a clear look, low-iron glass avoids the green edge tint.
What to specify: - Type — toughened (tempered) safety glass: for tabletops, shelves and anything within reach or under load — far stronger, and safe breakage (granules, not shards). For a shelf carrying real weight, toughened is the safe call. - Thickness — by span + use: a protective topper on a supported solid table can be thinner; a large unsupported tabletop or a loaded/wider shelf needs to be thicker (and properly supported) so it doesn't flex or break. Ask the specialist to size the thickness to your dimensions and load — don't guess. - Edges — polished: flat-polished or bevelled/pencil-edge so it's smooth and safe to touch (raw cut edges chip and cut). Choose the edge profile you like. - Shape + cut-outs: any shape, radius corners, holes/cut-outs are possible — but done before toughening, so finalise the design first (you can't drill/cut toughened glass later). - Clarity: low-iron glass if you want a truly clear look without the greenish edge tint (nice on thick or display glass).
Practicalities: - Rounded corners are safer and less chip-prone than sharp ones on a tabletop. - Supports/brackets for shelves sized to the glass and load; a topper needs little pads to sit on. - Toughened resists everyday knocks better, but a hard point-impact on an edge can still break it — treat edges kindly.
Common mistake: ordering annealed (non-safety) glass for a shelf or table to save money (chips, cracks, dangerous break), the wrong thickness for the span (flex/breakage), or finalising the shape after toughening (can't be cut). Toughened with polished edges and rounded corners is what we got for a dining tabletop and it's been perfect — safe to touch, hasn't chipped, and the rounded corners feel much better than sharp ones. The thickness they specced for the size felt reassuringly solid; a thinner one would have flexed. Low-iron was worth it so the edges didn't look green. The key thing I learned is the shape and any holes are cut before toughening, so you can't tweak it after — get the size and design right first. Don't cheap out to annealed on anything people lean on.
For shelves carrying weight, definitely toughened and the right thickness plus proper brackets — a too-thin annealed shelf is a breakage waiting to happen. We had tabletops and shelves cut to size and the specialist templated and polished everything; the polished edges are the difference between "finished" and "raw and sharp." Rounded corners on the table for the kids. The cut-before-toughening rule is the one to remember — decide the exact size and any cut-outs upfront. Cost a bit more than grabbing stock glass, but it fits perfectly and it's safe, which for a tabletop matters.
