How is a frameless glass door actually fixed and made to work — hinges, floor spring, lock?
We want a frameless glass door — for an internal doorway/office area, not a shower.

Short answer: a frameless glass door is a single sheet of TOUGHENED safety glass (typically ~10-12mm) that has no surrounding frame — it's held and swings on small metal PATCH FITTINGS at the corners, or on a FLOOR SPRING (a pivot mechanism set into the floor) for a heavier door, with patch hinges or a top pivot at the head. The handle and lock aren't screwed on like a timber door — they fit through HOLES and CUT-OUTS that are drilled/cut into the glass, and (this is the critical bit) all those cut-outs and edge-work must be done BEFORE the glass is toughened, because you can't drill or cut toughened glass afterwards without shattering it. So the door is made to exact measurements, cut/drilled/polished, then toughened, then fitted. It's genuinely different from a shower screen (which is an enclosure/panel, often fixed) and from a fixed glass partition (a divider that doesn't move) — a frameless glass DOOR is an operating leaf that has to be engineered to swing, self-close and lock. Get the structural fixing at the head right (it carries the weight) and use a proper floor spring for anything heavy, and it works beautifully and lasts.
How it's held + moves: - Patch fittings: small stainless corner clamps (top + bottom) that grip the glass and connect to hinges/pivots — the common frameless method. - Floor spring: a pivot + closer set into the floor for heavier doors — gives a controlled self-close and takes the weight. Paired with a top pivot/patch. - Head fixing: the top must fix to sound structure — it carries the load.
Handle + lock: - Fit through drilled holes / cut-outs in the glass (handles, patch lock, keeper). - All cut-outs done BEFORE toughening — you cannot machine toughened glass later.
The glass: - Toughened (tempered) safety glass, usually ~10-12mm for a door; sometimes toughened-laminated for extra security/quiet.
Vs shower screen / partition: - Shower screen = wet-area enclosure/panel (often fixed); frameless balustrade = a barrier; partition = a fixed divider. A frameless door is an operating, self-closing, lockable leaf — more engineering.
Common mistake: ordering the glass, then deciding on the handle/lock position — too late once it's toughened. Finalise EVERY cut-out first, fix the head into real structure, and let a glass and glazing specialist template, toughen and fit it. Anyone put a frameless glass door in an apartment/office?
We put a frameless glass door between the living area and a home office and it looks fantastic. The installer templated everything first — hinge positions, handle holes, the lock keeper — because as they said, once it's toughened you can't touch it. Ours is on patch fittings with a floor spring so it self-closes softly. The one thing I'd stress is the fixing at the top has to go into something solid; they reinforced the head. It's a proper door, not a panel, so it needed more thought than I expected. Beautiful once done though, and it makes the space feel open but still closable for calls.
Did frameless glass doors for a couple of meeting rooms in the office. Floor springs were worth it for the heavier doors — they self-close smoothly and take the weight off the fittings. Get the ironmongery (handle, lock, patch fittings) specified up front because it all has to be cut into the glass pre-toughening. We learned that a slightly bigger toughened-laminated spec was quieter for meeting rooms too. Definitely a specialist job to template and fit, not DIY. The frameless look is very clean and professional and hasn't dated.
