How do I know my pool and garden electrics are actually safe — pump, lights, sockets?

We've got a pool, garden lighting, outdoor sockets and a pump, and it hit me I've no idea if any of it is safe — water and electricity together is exactly what scares me.

This is the *safety* side (not the garden-lighting design choices). How do I make sure nobody gets a shock out there?

Short answer: pool and wet-outdoor areas are the highest-shock-risk electrics in a home, so they need three things done right: (1) 30mA RCD protection on every outdoor/pool circuit, so a fault cuts off in milliseconds before it can hurt someone; (2) proper weatherproof, IP-rated fittings and enclosures rated for outdoors/water (splash- and jet-proof), not indoor kit used outside; and (3) equipotential BONDING of the pool's metal parts (ladders, pump, rails, reinforcement) so everything sits at the same potential and can't become live relative to the water. This is specialist work — a licensed electrician should install and verify it; it is NOT a DIY area.

What makes it safe: - RCD protection (30mA): the non-negotiable one. Every socket, pump, and light in the pool/garden zone must be on a 30mA RCD that trips on earth leakage almost instantly. Water + a fault without an RCD is how people die; with one, the supply cuts before it's dangerous. - IP-rated weatherproof fittings: outdoor sockets, lights and junction boxes must be IP-rated for outdoor/wet exposure (splash-proof, and jet-proof where hoses reach) — sealed against water and dust, in weatherproof enclosures. Indoor accessories used outside are a classic, dangerous mistake. - Equipotential bonding: the pool's metal parts (rails, ladder, pump, any reinforcement) are bonded together so there's no voltage difference between them and the water — a core pool-safety requirement, not optional. - Correct zoning & cable: kit is chosen for how close it is to the water (the closer, the stricter), on properly-routed outdoor cable.

How to get it checked: - Have a licensed electrician inspect and test the pool and outdoor circuits — confirm the RCDs work (test them), the fittings are properly IP-rated and intact, and the pool bonding is present and sound. UAE sun also degrades outdoor fittings over time, so it's worth periodic re-checks, not a one-off.

Common mistake: an outdoor socket or pump with no RCD, or an indoor-grade fitting weathering outside — both are shock hazards around water. Never DIY pool electrics: get it inspected and put right by a professional. Anyone tested their outdoor RCD lately — does it actually trip?

The "test the RCD actually trips" point is underrated — ours had an RCD but when the electrician pressed the test button on the pool circuit it didn't trip, which is worse than useless because you think you're protected and you're not. Also caught an outdoor junction box that had cracked in the sun and was letting water in. Both cheap fixes, both genuinely dangerous around a pool. Get someone to actually test it rather than assuming the box on the wall is doing its job. Water and electricity is not the place to guess.

From managing properties with pools: the bonding is the bit homeowners have never heard of and it's exactly what stops the water and the metalwork becoming a shock path. That plus a working 30mA RCD on every outdoor circuit is the core of it. And the UAE sun genuinely wrecks outdoor fittings — seals perish, plastics crack — so pool/garden electrics need re-checking periodically, not fitted once and forgotten. Get it inspected properly; it's the one area where a mistake is potentially fatal rather than just inconvenient.
