Back-painted glass

Back-painted (or lacquered) glass has its rear face coated in an opaque colour, so you see a solid, glossy colour *through* the glass from the front. It's the usual way to get a coloured glass splashback, feature wall or cladding panel in any shade — seamless, hygienic and wipe-clean, with no grout lines like tiles. For pale or true colours, low-iron glass is used on the front so the colour isn't tinted green by the glass. Behind a hob it must be toughened (heat-resistant safety glass), and because it's a made-to-measure product, any socket cut-outs are done before toughening — see the glass splashback thread.
