Cornice (gypsum cornice / coving)

A cornice (also called coving when it's a simple concave curve) is the decorative moulding that runs along the join between wall and ceiling. In gypsum work it does a practical job as well as a decorative one: it hides the wall-ceiling joint and any crack-prone line there, gives the room a finished, softer edge, and in a gypsum false ceiling a deep cove/cornice can conceal LED strip lighting for indirect 'floating' effects. It ranges from plain modern shadow-gaps and simple coving to ornate classical profiles, and is usually formed in gypsum/plaster, then skim-coated and painted to blend in. Profile choice should suit the ceiling height and style — too large in a low room feels heavy. A gypsum and painting specialist can run or fit cornice to match the ceiling design.
