Economizer (free cooling)

Also called: economiser, free cooling, air-side economizer, water-side economizer

An economizer is a control strategy that cools a building using naturally cool air or water — 'free cooling' — instead of running the chiller or compressor, whenever outside conditions allow. There are two kinds. An air-side economizer opens dampers to bring in cool outdoor air when it's cooler than the return air, so the AC coasts. A water-side economizer uses cool cooling-tower water to cool the chilled-water loop directly, bypassing the compressor. The honest Dubai caveat: for most of the year it's simply too hot outside for an air-side economizer to help, so they're far less common here than in temperate climates. But they still earn their place on the cooler winter nights, in the shoulder seasons, and for 24/7 loads like data rooms — where even a few hours of free cooling a day cuts the bill. It's a cousin of demand-controlled ventilation: both are about not spending energy you don't have to. Where one is fitted, a stuck or mis-set economizer damper can quietly waste energy or let hot air in — worth checking as part of AC repair in Dubai on any system that has one.
