Demand-controlled ventilation (DCV)

Demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) is fresh-air ventilation that adjusts to real demand instead of running at a fixed maximum all the time. Sensors — usually CO₂ (a proxy for how many people are in the space) or occupancy — tell the system to bring in more outside air when a room is busy and less when it's empty. The reason it matters so much in Dubai is energy: every cubic metre of fresh outside air has to be cooled and dried from 45°C down to room temperature, which is expensive, so conditioning fresh air you don't actually need is pure waste. In a meeting room, a mall, a restaurant or an office with swinging occupancy, DCV keeps the air changes per hour high enough for comfort and health when it's full, then throttles back when it's not — cutting the cooling bill without making the air stuffy. It's the smarter middle ground between 'no fresh air' (stuffy, high CO₂) and 'full fresh air always' (comfortable but costly). It pairs with good static pressure control and is worth specifying on any variable-occupancy space — the kind of efficiency review that goes with proper AC maintenance in Dubai.
