Grout float

A grout float is a flat hand tool with a soft rubber or foam face used to force grout into the joints between tiles and then scrape away the surplus. It's worked diagonally — held at roughly 45° across the joints — so the rubber edge packs each joint full without dragging the grout back out. Whatever grout is being used — standard cement-based or epoxy grout — the float is the tool that actually gets it into the joint. Getting this stage right matters more than people expect: joints have to be fully packed with no voids, tooled to a consistent depth, and cleaned before the haze sets. Under-filled or hollow joints crack and let water track behind the tile — the very failure a waterproofing membrane is there to stop, and a common start of the damp and debonding that follows a rushed wet-area job. Timing is everything: wipe too early and you drag grout out of the joint, too late and the haze bakes on. It's fiddly, repetitive work that rewards a steady hand, which is why a full re-grout or a wet-area retile is usually worth handing to a finishing and snagging team rather than fighting it yourself.
