Y-strainer

A Y-strainer is a small Y-shaped fitting plumbed into a pipe with a fine mesh or perforated screen inside, set in the angled 'tail' of the Y, that catches rust, grit, scale and weld slag before they reach something delicate downstream. On a chilled-water fan-coil unit (FCU) it sits on the supply to the coil and protects both the motorised control valve and the coil itself from the debris that circulates in a building's chilled-water loop. The catch is that the screen gradually clogs, and a blocked strainer starves the coil of flow — so one room cools poorly while the rest of the building is fine, the classic single-FCU complaint that gets wrongly blamed on the central chiller. Clearing it is simple maintenance: isolate the branch, unscrew the blow-down cap at the bottom of the Y, withdraw and rinse the screen, and refit. If it re-clogs quickly the real problem is dirty system water (corrosion, or a missing side-stream filter), not the strainer itself. Don't confuse the strainer — a mechanical debris filter in the water — with the air filter on the return-air side of the unit; different jobs, and a weak FCU can be either.
