Are in-duct air purifiers or UV lights in the AC worth it for indoor air quality?
I keep seeing in-duct air purifiers and UV lights pitched as AC add-ons for cleaner, healthier indoor air (dust, allergies, mould).
- Do these actually work, and are they worth it in a dusty, humid place like the UAE?
- Or is a good filter and regular cleaning enough?
- What's the difference between them, and what should I prioritise?

Short answer: they can help, but they're the LAST step, not the first. The foundation of indoor air quality in the dusty, humid UAE is a properly-sized clean FILTER (right MERV), a CLEAN evaporator coil and drain (no biofilm/mould), and controlling humidity. Get those right and you've fixed most of it. UV lights and in-duct purifiers are add-ons on TOP — UV mainly keeps the coil/drain free of mould; in-duct purifiers target finer particles — but bolting either onto a dirty system is money wasted.
- UV light (on the coil): best-supported use is keeping the coil and drain free of mould/biofilm (cuts the musty smell in humid climates). Air-sterilising claims are weaker.
- In-duct purifier / higher filtration: targets finer particles beyond a basic filter; effectiveness varies by type/quality.
Prioritise in order: (1) right filter, clean — correct MERV, changed on schedule (biggest IAQ lever + protects the coil); (2) clean coil + drain; (3) humidity control (damp = mould); (4) THEN add-ons — UV on the coil if mould recurs, better filtration for specific allergy/particle needs. Don't buy an add-on to rescue a neglected system — get the filter, coil/drain and humidity right first with a proper AC clean and service, then consider UV/filtration. Anyone added a coil UV lamp and noticed less musty smell?
Good to hear it framed as "add-on, not rescue" — I was about to buy an in-duct purifier for a room that turned out to just need a proper coil clean and a better filter. Once sorted, the air was noticeably fresher without any gadget. The UV-on-the-coil idea makes sense for keeping the musty smell down in our humidity, but only after the basics. Filter + clean coil + humidity first; fancy add-ons only if there's a specific problem left. Saved myself some money.
Tech-buyer view: tempting to jump to the gadget, but the boring fundamentals do the heavy lifting — right filter, clean coil, controlled humidity. I did eventually add a coil UV lamp because a humid room kept getting a musty coil, and for that specific use it helps. But I'd have wasted money buying it before sorting the servicing. Prioritise filter/coil/humidity, then add UV for coil hygiene if mould's your actual problem. Match the add-on to a real issue.
