One room is always hotter than the rest on our ducted AC — can the airflow be balanced?
We have ducted AC and one bedroom is always warmer than the rest of the house — you can feel the difference walking in. The system itself works fine; every other room cools well, and dropping the thermostat just over-cools everywhere else while that room stays warm.
So this doesn't feel like a broken AC — more like the air isn't getting to that room properly. (Different from the chiller room-to-room issue, this is a ducted split.)
Questions:
- Is this an airflow / duct-balancing issue, and can it be adjusted?
- What actually gets changed — dampers, the vent, the ducting, the return air?
- Or is it a design flaw I'm stuck with (room too far from the unit, undersized duct)?

Short answer: one warm room on an otherwise-fine ducted system is almost always an airflow-balancing problem, not a broken AC — and it's usually adjustable. The air is taking the path of least resistance to the nearer/bigger outlets, starving the far room. Balancing dampers, checking the duct run to that room, and the return-air path are what fix it.
What's actually happening and what gets adjusted: - Damper balancing — ducted systems have (or can have) balancing dampers in the branches. Partly closing the dampers to the easy rooms forces more air to the starved one. This is the first and cheapest fix and often solves it. - The duct run to that room — if it's a long, kinked, crushed or undersized/leaky duct (or a flexible duct that's sagged), that room gets less air no matter what. Straightening/sealing/upsizing it helps. - Return air — a room with a closed door and no return path can't circulate cooled air well; an undercut door or a return grille helps. - Register/outlet — a partly-blocked or wrong-sized grille.
When it's more than balancing: if that room is far from the unit, has big west glazing, or the branch is genuinely undersized, balancing helps but the room may also need its own boost (or, in a redesign, its own zone). Right-sizing and layout matter — it's the trade-off people weigh in ducted-vs-multi-split.
Common mistake: cranking the thermostat to cool the one room — you just freeze the rest and waste power. Get an AC maintenance service in Dubai to balance the dampers and check that room's duct/return first; it's usually a genuine fix, not a rebuild. Anyone solved a stubborn far-room with a booster fan in the duct?
Had a hot far-bedroom on ducted and damper balancing fixed 80% of it — the tech throttled the flow to the nearer rooms (which were over-cooling anyway) and pushed more to the far one. The last bit was the door: it was always shut with no return path, so the cooled air had nowhere to circulate. A small undercut on the door sorted it. Cost almost nothing versus what I feared. Definitely try balancing before assuming it's a design flaw.
Ours turned out to be a sagged flexible duct in the ceiling void that had half-collapsed, choking the airflow to one room — so it wasn't balancing, it was a physical restriction. Worth having them actually look at the duct run to the problem room, not just adjust dampers, if balancing doesn't do it. Once the duct was re-supported and straightened, the room cooled like the rest. The point is: it was fixable, not a live-with-it.
