My AC thermostat isn't controlling the temperature properly — is it the thermostat or the wiring?

My thermostat's display lights up and works, but the AC doesn't respond to it properly — it won't hold the temperature I set, or the unit just seems to ignore it (runs when it shouldn't, or won't kick in when it should).

I can't tell if the thermostat itself has failed or there's a wiring problem behind it. I keep seeing "C-wire" mentioned in relation to this, especially with smart ones.

Short answer: if the thermostat's screen works but the AC won't obey it, the fault is usually in the low-voltage control side — a loose/broken control wire, a bad connection at the unit, or a missing/flaky C-wire — NOT necessarily the thermostat. A working display only proves it has power, not that its switching signal is reaching the unit. Test the wiring before you spend on a new thermostat.

The C-wire explained: a thermostat needs a 24V control circuit — the "R" (power) and "C" (common) wires complete the loop that lets it continuously power itself and send signals. Older setups powered the thermostat by "stealing" through the system; modern/smart thermostats need a proper C-wire (common) or they behave erratically — dropping out, not switching, not holding temperature. That's why it comes up so often.

How to narrow it down: 1. Check 24V across R–C at the thermostat. No stable 24V → wiring/transformer problem, not the thermostat. 2. Jumper test at the unit: briefly link the relevant control terminals at the indoor unit — if the AC then responds correctly, the unit and compressor are fine and the fault is the thermostat or the wire to it. 3. Inspect terminations — a backed-out or corroded control wire at either end is a classic "ignores the thermostat" cause here.

So: display working ≠ thermostat healthy. If 24V is stable and the jumper test works but the stat still won't control it, then replace the thermostat; otherwise it's wiring. Get a licensed electrician to check the C-wire and the 24V control circuit before swapping parts. Anyone found theirs was just a dropped C-wire?

Good rule from the AC side: "screen on" only tells you the thermostat has power, nothing more. I've seen plenty where the display was perfect and the actual fault was a control wire that had backed out of the terminal at the indoor unit, so the switching signal never arrived. The jumper-at-the-unit test Sparky mentions is the quick truth-teller — if the AC jumps to life when you bridge the terminals, stop blaming the box on the wall and look at the wire. Smart thermostats especially will act possessed without a proper C-wire.

Replaced a thermostat that "wasn't working," and the new one did exactly the same thing — because it was never the thermostat, it was a loose common wire. Wasted the cost of a stat I didn't need. Lesson: prove it's the thermostat (24V + jumper test) before buying one. If you're going smart, ask specifically about the C-wire up front, because that's the thing that makes the difference between it working and it constantly dropping out.
