Most threads here are about an AC drain dripping — mine is a bit different. My AC's condensate drain isn't dripping onto the floor, but it smells bad, sometimes gurgles when the unit runs, and the water seems slow to clear. Occasionally there's a faint sewage-ish whiff near the unit.

So it's more of a smell/backflow issue than the classic drip:

Short answer: a condensate drain that smells, gurgles and clears slowly points to biofilm/algae building up in the line PLUS either a missing/dry trap letting drain odours back up, or a poorly-run/flat drain that can't clear properly. The gurgle is air struggling past a partial blockage. A condensate pump is separate — it's used when the unit sits below the drain point and can't drain by gravity.

What's actually going on, point by point: - The smell + slime: the drain carries warm, damp water full of the biofilm/mould from the drain pan — over time it grows a smelly slime layer that both stinks and narrows the pipe. This is the usual source of the musty/sour drain smell. - The sewage-ish whiff: if the condensate drain ties into a waste/floor drain, it needs a proper trap (like a sink's U-bend) to block sewer gas coming back up the AC line. The trap point is the one that surprised people I know — a sewer-ish smell from the AC turned out to be the condensate line tied into a floor drain with no trap, so drain gas was coming up through the AC. Adding a proper trap killed the smell. If yours has a sewage whiff specifically (not just musty), get them to check where the drain terminates and whether there's a trap. Musty-only is more likely just the biofilm in the line.

Concealed unit in the café had a condensate pump and when it started failing, the tray backed up and overflowed — so if your unit is a ceiling/concealed one that can't gravity-drain, ask whether there's a pump and whether it's the culprit. Regular flushing of the drain line stopped the smell-and-gurgle for us; it builds that slime back surprisingly fast in the heat, so it's a scheduled thing, not one-and-done.
