Is AC duct cleaning worth it in Dubai — and what should it actually cost?

Good question, because "duct cleaning" gets sold to a lot of people who don't even have ducts. Quick reality check first:

• Split AC (most apartments) has no ducts — just a washable filter and an indoor coil. If someone quotes you "duct cleaning" for a split unit, they mean a filter-and-coil clean. Don't pay duct prices for it.
• Ducted / central AC (your villa, and a lot of newer towers) genuinely has a duct network, and *that* can hold dust, and in our humidity, mould — which is exactly the musty smell you're describing.

So for you it's worth it. It's genuinely needed when you get: a musty or dusty smell on start-up, visible black speckling around the supply grilles, after a renovation, or if anyone in the house has allergies. As a routine, every 1–2 years is plenty for a villa here.

What a *proper* job includes: cleaning each supply and return outlet, the flexible ducts, the coil and drain pan, and a sanitising fog — not just running a vacuum hose at the nearest grille. Fair pricing is usually per outlet or a per-property rate; for a 2–3 bed you're looking at roughly AED 800–1,500. Be very wary of the AED 250 "whole villa" jobs — that's a surface wipe, not a clean.

Protect yourself: ask for the scope in writing (how many outlets, coil included?) and before/after photos of the inside of the ducts. No photos, no clean.
