Does a dirty AC filter really raise your DEWA bill? How often to clean it
Someone told me half my summer electricity is the AC and that keeping the filters clean noticeably cuts the bill. I run a small place in JLT so any saving on the DEWA bill matters.
Is that actually true, or is it one of those things people repeat? And realistically how often should the filters be cleaned to make a difference?

It's true, and it's the cheapest efficiency win there is. Here's the mechanism, no hand-waving:
A clogged filter chokes the airflow across the coil. The unit then has to run longer to hit the temperature you set, and a starved coil often ices up, which cripples cooling and makes it run even longer. Longer runtime = more kWh = a bigger DEWA bill. It's also the single most common reason I get called out for "weak cooling" that turns out to be free to fix.
Routine that works in this climate: - Pull and rinse the washable filters every 2–4 weeks in peak summer, monthly the rest of the year. Dry them fully before refitting — a damp filter breeds smell. - Once a year, pair it with a proper coil and drain clean, because the filter protects the coil but doesn't clean it.
That plus a sensible thermostat setpoint (24°C is plenty) is most of the saving right there. Same principle applies whichever emirate you're in — I'm on SEWA in Sharjah, a friend's on ADDC in Abu Dhabi, doesn't matter. Clean filter, shorter runtime, smaller bill. It's the single easiest thing on the list and it's free. I do mine on the first of every month so I don't forget.
