How much should an AC gas refill actually cost in Dubai?
A technician quoted me to "refill the gas" on my split AC because it wasn't cooling well. The figure felt made up on the spot. What's a fair price for an AC gas refill in Dubai, and how do I know I'm not being upsold?

Two things decide the price: which refrigerant your unit uses and how much it needs.
- R410A (newer units) and R22 (older units) are priced differently — R22 is being phased out (see Danfoss's refrigerant guidance) and costs more. The technician should know which yours takes from the outdoor unit label.
- A top-up is usually a few hundred dirhams for a single split; a full recharge after repairs costs more.
The upsell red flag isn't the price — it's skipping the leak check. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up"; if it's low, it leaked out. A proper job means gauges on the system, finding the leak (nitrogen/soap test), fixing it, then recharging. If someone just tops it up with no leak test, you'll be paying again by next month. Ask: "Where's the leak, and what will you do to fix it?" A good tech has an answer. Because a top-up without finding the leak is gone by August, get AC repair and maintenance that locates and fixes the leak, not just refills the gas.
Learned this the expensive way — paid for two "refills" in one summer before someone actually found the leak at a flare joint. Insist on the leak test the first time.
Exactly the sanity check I needed. Getting a second opinion with a proper leak test. Thanks!
Worth adding the follow-up question to "what should a gas refill cost": if your unit needs gas more than once, the real answer isn't a cheaper refill — it's a leak test instead of another top-up. A sealed AC doesn't use up refrigerant, so a recurring "needs gas" is a leak; one proper repair usually costs less than two or three summers of refills. Get the price of the refill, but ask about the leak first.
