My AC suddenly got loud — what do the different noises mean?
My split AC used to be quiet and now it's noticeably loud when it runs. I'm trying to work out whether it's something simple or a sign it's about to fail.

The sound tells you a lot. Roughly:
- Rattling / vibrating — a loose cover panel or screws, or debris (leaves, a twig) in the outdoor fan. Usually harmless and DIY-fixable: power off and check.
- Buzzing / loud humming — electrical. Often a failing capacitor or a contactor; the compressor may struggle to start. Get it checked before it strands you.
- Grinding / screeching — a fan-motor bearing wearing out. Don't ignore this one; the motor can seize.
- Clicking that won't stop — a relay/thermostat issue.
- Gurgling / hissing — can indicate a refrigerant issue (possible leak).
Rule of thumb: rattles and debris you can handle; buzzing, grinding and hissing mean call a technician. Power the unit off if the noise is harsh — running a seizing motor makes it worse.
Mine was a rattle — turned out to be one loose screw on the outdoor cover plus a small twig in the fan guard. Two-minute fix once I knew what to look for.
For anyone landing on this later trying to work out *which* noise means what, there's now a fuller breakdown thread on what a rattle vs a buzz vs a hiss actually means — including which ones are a cheap tighten-and-clean and which (a hiss especially) mean switch it off and call someone. Worth a read alongside this one if your unit's got noisy.
