Why is my DEWA bill so high in summer, and how do I bring it down?
My DEWA bill roughly triples once summer lands — last July was genuinely eye-watering for a 3-bed villa in Jumeirah. I know AC is the culprit, but I would love to know what actually moves the needle versus what is a myth.
Is it worth changing habits, or is a high summer bill just the cost of living here?

AC is 60 to 70% of your summer electricity here, so that is where the wins are. Free ones first: set the thermostat around 24C (every degree colder is roughly 5 to 8% more consumption), and clean the filters monthly — a clogged filter makes the unit work far harder for the same cooling.
Then seal the leaks: gaps under doors, thin curtains on west-facing glass, and cooling empty rooms. Bigger picture, a unit that is never serviced runs with a dirty coil at low efficiency — see cooling capacity on why an under-performing unit just runs longer for the same result.
To add — the single most underrated fix is a proper coil clean. A dust-caked outdoor coil in this climate can add 20 to 30% to running cost because the unit cannot shed heat and just keeps running. A once-a-season AC cleaning usually pays for itself over a Dubai summer. If any part of your cooling is district cooling that is billed separately, but for a Jumeirah villa on splits it is almost all DEWA.
Did not realise the coil made that much difference. Booking a clean and dropping the thermostat a degree — will report back after next month bill.
