How does a tech actually TEST an AC capacitor — how do you know it's really dead?

From the what-is-the-capacitor thread I get the basics, and that a swollen top = dead. But what if it looks fine and I still suspect it's weak?

  • How does a technician properly test a dual-run capacitor?
  • What tool and what reading, and how do you know a µF value is out of spec?
  • Is it something with a clear pass/fail, or a judgement call?

I want to understand how a real diagnosis is done (so I can tell a proper check from a guess), not do it myself — I know it holds a charge. What's the actual method?

Short answer: you test a capacitor by measuring its actual capacitance in microfarads (µF) with a meter that has a capacitance setting, and comparing it to the rating printed on the can. First you DISCHARGE it safely (it stores a dangerous charge even with the power off), then read each section. If the measured µF has dropped meaningfully below the rating, it's weak and should be replaced — even if it looks perfectly fine. A capacitor doesn't have to be bulging to be failing.

How it's actually done: 1. Power off and discharge. Kill the breaker, then safely discharge the capacitor (a pro uses a proper discharge tool/resistor across the terminals). This is the non-negotiable safety step — a charged capacitor can give you a serious, even dangerous, shock. 2. Meter on capacitance (µF) mode. Use a multimeter with a capacitance function (or a dedicated capacitor tester). 3. Read each section of the dual-run. Measure C–FAN and C–HERM (compressor) separately against the printed values, e.g. a 45/5 µF cap should read close to 45 and 5. 4. Compare to the rating + tolerance. Capacitors are rated with a tolerance (commonly around ±6%). Within tolerance = good; significantly below (say a 45 reading 35, or a 5 reading 3) = weak, replace it. Open/zero = dead.

Why "looks fine" isn't enough: a capacitor can lose capacitance and cause hard-starting, humming or breaker trips while still looking flat-topped and normal. The swollen top is a *sure* sign it's gone, but plenty of dead ones look fine — which is exactly why you measure rather than eyeball. It's also why "I replaced the capacitor and it fixed it" beats "it looked ok so I ruled it out."

So a proper diagnosis is: discharge → read µF → compare to the printed rating. If a tech swaps parts without ever putting a meter on it, they're guessing. Get an AC repair tech who tests the µF, not just looks. Anyone had a normal-looking cap test way low?

Exactly right — the meter is the truth-teller. I test the µF on any no-start or hard-start before touching anything else, because a tired capacitor reading low is the most common find and the cheapest fix, and you'd never know from looking. The discharge step matters: these hold a punch even after the power's off, so it's genuinely not a DIY poke. If someone quotes you a compressor without having measured the capacitor first, be very sceptical — you don't condemn the expensive part before ruling out the cheap one with a meter.

Useful to know there's an actual number behind it rather than "probably the capacitor." Now I understand why the good techs get a meter out and read it against the sticker — my last one showed me the reading was well under the rating even though the part looked normal. Makes the difference between a measured diagnosis and a parts-swap guess really clear. And noted on not touching it myself — the "discharge it first or it bites you" warning is enough to keep me out of the outdoor unit.
