How often should an AC actually need a regas — and what does a proper regas involve?
From the threads here I've learned a sealed AC shouldn't lose refrigerant unless there's a leak. Yet companies still push an annual "regas" as if it's routine maintenance.
So I want to pin down two things:
- How often is a regas genuinely legitimate? Should a healthy AC ever need one on a schedule?
- When one IS needed (say after a leak repair), what does a PROPER regas actually involve — is it just connecting a bottle and topping up until it cools, or is there a real procedure?
I want to know what "done properly" looks like so I can tell a real job from someone just venting a bottle in and charging me. What's the right way?

Short answer: a healthy, sealed AC should essentially NEVER need a routine regas — refrigerant isn't consumed, so "annual regas" as scheduled maintenance is a myth (and a red flag). A regas is only legitimate AFTER a leak has been found and repaired, or when a system's been opened for a repair. And a proper regas is not "top up till it's cold" — it's recover, repair, vacuum, then weigh in the exact charge.
How often is legitimate? Only when the system has lost charge — which only happens via a leak (or a repair that opened the system). If a unit "needs gas" on a schedule, it has a leak that should be fixed, not refilled yearly. So the honest answer is: a sound AC shouldn't need regassing at all between leak events.
What a proper regas involves (the real procedure): 1. Fix the leak first — regassing a leaking system just pays to refill the atmosphere. 2. Recover the remaining refrigerant properly (not vent it — venting is both illegal-in-spirit and wasteful). 3. Pull a deep vacuum — evacuate the system to remove air and moisture. Skipping this is the #1 lazy shortcut; moisture in the system causes acid, corrosion and early death. 4. Weigh in the charge — recharge to the manufacturer's specified weight (off the nameplate), then verify with superheat/subcooling, not by guessing "feels cold."
The lazy version — hook a bottle up and gas it until the air feels cold — overshoots or undershoots the charge, skips the vacuum, and never touches the leak. It's the version to refuse.
So: routine regas = no. Post-leak regas done by recover → vacuum → weigh-in = yes. A proper AC service and regas does it by the numbers. Anyone been offered a "yearly regas package" — did you push back?
The "weigh in the charge" bit is the tell for me now. A proper tech knows the exact gas weight the unit needs (it's on the sticker) and charges to that on a scale; the lazy one just gasses until the pipe feels cold and calls it done, which is guesswork. I turned down a "yearly regas" once I understood a sealed system doesn't burn gas — if it needs it every year, they should be finding my leak, not selling me a refill subscription. Ask them how they'll set the charge; "by weight, after a vacuum" is the right answer.
Didn't know about the vacuum step until now — apparently pulling a vacuum to get the moisture out is the part cheap jobs skip, and it's the part that stops the system corroding from the inside. So even when a regas IS legit (after a leak fix), it's worth asking whether they vacuum it first. "Top it up" with no vacuum and no leak repair sounds like exactly the service to avoid. Good to know what the corners are before someone cuts them on me.
A seasonal note now the peak is passing: if you had the AC gassed up before the summer and it is already struggling again, do not just book another top-up for next spring, that pattern (needing gas every year or two) means a leak, and topping it up repeatedly just pays for the same gas to leak out again while the compressor runs low and wears. Now, as the load drops, is the sensible time to have the system leak-tested and the leak actually found and fixed, rather than in a mid-summer panic. A proper regas is evacuate, leak-check, then charge by weight to the nameplate figure, not a quick shot of gas until it feels cold. If yours has needed gas more than once, treat this autumn as the moment to break the cycle.
