My AC's outdoor unit buzzes and chatters when it tries to start — a rapid rattly electrical hum. Sometimes it catches and runs, sometimes it just sits there buzzing.
I know the general noise-diagnosis thread says a buzz is electrical — I want to go a level deeper on this specific one. Someone said "contactor."

Short answer: the contactor is the heavy-duty electrical switch that connects mains power to your compressor and outdoor fan when the thermostat calls for cooling. A buzzing/chattering contactor is it failing to "pull in" and hold cleanly — usually a weak/failing coil, low control voltage, or pitted/burnt contacts. It's related to but DIFFERENT from the breaker-tripping problem: same circuit, different failure — here the switch itself can't close properly, so the compressor is stranded.
What the contactor does: it's an electromagnet-operated switch. When the thermostat calls, a 24V signal energises the contactor's coil, which snaps the main contacts shut and powers the compressor. When it's healthy you hear one clean "clunk."
Why it buzzes/chatters: - Failing coil — can't hold the contacts closed firmly, so they vibrate/chatter at mains frequency (the buzz). - Low control voltage — not enough to pull it in cleanly. - Pitted/burnt/welded contacts — arcing and poor contact; sometimes ants/debris get in too (surprisingly common in the UAE).
How it differs from the breaker-tripping issue: there, the compressor draws too much and the breaker trips to protect the circuit; here, the contactor itself can't make a solid connection, so the compressor may not even get clean power (it chatters, half-starts, or sits humming). Both strand the compressor, but the failing part is different.
Good news: a contactor is a cheap, common wear part — a straightforward replacement for a technician. Don't ignore it though: chattering means intermittent power to the compressor, and a compressor fed dirty on/off power hates it. Get the electrical side checked and the contactor replaced before it takes the compressor with it. Anyone opened theirs and found it full of ants?
Backing this from the AC side: a chattering contactor is one of the most common and cheapest outdoor-unit faults I see, and it's very satisfying to fix because the symptom is dramatic (buzz, won't start) but the part is small and inexpensive. The important bit Bilal makes is don't let it run like that — every chatter is the compressor getting made-and-broken power, which is hard on it. Catch the £-few-part contactor now rather than the expensive compressor later. And yes, ants and dust bridging the contacts is a real UAE thing.
Mine did exactly this — sat buzzing, occasionally caught. Turned out to be a tired contactor and it was a quick, cheap swap. The tech showed me the old one and the contacts were pitted and burnt.
