What actually drives the cost of replacing a home AC in Dubai — where does the money go?
We're likely to replace at least one AC unit before next summer and the quotes I'm getting are all over the place, which makes me think some are missing things others include. Rather than just chase the cheapest number, I'd like to understand what actually drives the cost of an AC replacement here, so I can tell whether a quote is complete or whether I'll get surprised with extras later. What are the real line items that move the price?

The headline unit price is often the smallest variable, which is exactly why quotes diverge. The real cost drivers on a Dubai AC replacement are: the capacity and type you genuinely need (an oversized or undersized guess costs you either way), whether it's a straightforward wall split or a ducted/concealed system that's far more labour, removing and disposing of the old unit and its gas legally, and any electrical or pipework the new install needs, a different isolator, longer or re-insulated pipe runs, a condensate route. Then there's the like-for-like versus upgrade decision: a higher-efficiency inverter costs more up front but changes the running-cost maths. A complete quote spells these out; a suspiciously cheap one usually assumes a clean like-for-like swap with no surprises, then bills the extras. When you compare, insist each quote lists capacity, unit type, removal/disposal, and electrical/pipework separately. Getting AC installation and replacement to survey and itemise before you commit is what stops the mid-job add-ons. No honest installer quotes a firm price without seeing the room, the existing pipework and the electrical supply first.
Learned to make everyone quote on the same scope. The cheap one on ours had quietly left out removing the old unit and re-doing the pipe insulation, which the others included. Once it was apples to apples the gap almost vanished.
