Balcony sliding door is stiff and hard to slide — how do I fix it?
The sliding door to my balcony has got really stiff — I have to yank it and it judders along the track. It used to glide. What causes this, and can it be fixed without replacing the whole door?

Don't replace anything yet — this is almost always cleanable and adjustable:
- Clean the bottom track. UAE dust and sand pack into the track and the rollers grind over it. Vacuum it out and wipe with a damp cloth. Don't grease the track (grease traps grit) — a dry silicone spray is better if you use anything.
- Adjust the rollers. Small screws at the bottom edge of the door (often behind little caps) raise/lower the rollers. If the door drags, the rollers may have dropped — a slight adjustment lifts the door off the track.
- Replace worn rollers. If the rollers are flat-spotted or seized, they're a cheap swap — the door lifts out and the roller assemblies come out the bottom.
Start with a proper track clean; it fixes a surprising number of "the door is broken" complaints. If cleaning the track and rollers doesn't free it, an aluminium and metalwork specialist in Dubai can re-roller and realign the door.
Cleaned years of sand out of ours and adjusted the rollers — glides like new. Wish I'd done it sooner instead of wrestling it every day.

One thing to add for a stiff sliding door: the same track-and-roller wear that makes it hard to open can also stress and crack the glass over time, so if you're getting it serviced it's the ideal moment to check the glass too. Worn rollers or a dirty/bent track make the door bind, and that binding load is a real cause of cracked panes.
