After a renovation, what electrical inspection or sign-off should happen before I use it?
We've had a renovation with new/altered wiring — moved sockets, new lighting, a new circuit or two.

Short answer: any new or altered wiring from a renovation should be TESTED and CERTIFIED by a licensed electrician before you rely on it — you don't just switch it on and trust it. The work should be inspected and tested (correct connections, polarity, earthing continuity, insulation resistance, and that the RCD/earth-leakage protection actually trips), and you should get a certificate/test record for the work done. On bigger fit-outs there's also the formal side — the building/authority sign-off before power is (re)connected — but even for a domestic reno, insist your electrician tests and documents the new circuits. Faults from renovation wiring (a reversed connection, a missed earth, an overloaded new circuit) are exactly the hidden dangers a proper test catches before they become a shock or a fire.
What should be checked/tested: - The new/altered circuits tested: correct connections and polarity, earthing/bonding continuity, insulation resistance, and that protective devices (RCD/MCB) operate (the RCD actually trips on test). - The additions are adequate: new loads on suitably-rated circuits, the board not overloaded, any new dedicated circuits done right. - Made-good safely: no junctions buried without access, cables protected/routed correctly, accessories secure. - A test record/certificate for the work — your proof it was verified, useful for insurance and any future sale.

Should you insist? (Yes) - Renovation wiring is exactly where hidden faults hide — a reversed live/neutral, a missing earth, a loose connection behind a new socket, an overloaded new circuit. A proper test finds them before they hurt someone or start a fire. It's a small cost for real safety and a record.
Common mistake: trusting new wiring because "the lights work" — working lights tell you nothing about earthing, polarity or RCD operation. We insisted on the electrician testing and certifying the new circuits after our reno and it caught a socket wired with reversed polarity — worked fine, would've been a nasty surprise.
