Do I need surge protection for my home, or are power strips enough for the electronics?
I want to protect my electronics (TV, computers, appliances) from voltage spikes, and I'm not sure what I actually need:

Short answer: the best protection is LAYERED — a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) fitted at the distribution board handles the larger transient spikes for the whole installation, and point-of-use surge protectors (good-quality surge strips/units) then protect your most sensitive, expensive electronics at the socket. Cheap surge strips alone are limited; a board-level SPD alone doesn't fully protect delicate electronics. For valuable kit, do both — a proper SPD at the board plus point-of-use protection where it matters.
What actually causes damaging transient spikes: - Switching transients — the biggest everyday source: large loads (AC compressors, motors, pumps) switching on/off generate brief voltage spikes on the wiring. - External/utility-side events and lightning-adjacent activity (a nearby strike induces surges even without a direct hit). - Faults elsewhere in the installation. (Note: these are transient events; I'm not making any claim about how often they happen on your supply — the point is that when one occurs, unprotected electronics are what pays.)
Whole-home vs point-of-use: - Whole-home SPD (at the DB): a device wired into the board that clamps larger transients arriving on the mains, protecting the whole installation. Fitted by an electrician; the foundation layer. - Point-of-use (surge strips/units at the socket): protect the specific sensitive device (TV/AV, computer, router) from what gets through, and are closest to the kit. Quality matters — a cheap "surge" strip offers little; look for a proper joule rating/clamping spec.
The sensible setup: 1. A whole-home SPD at the board (electrician-fitted) as the base layer. 2. Good point-of-use protection on the expensive/sensitive electronics. 3. For truly critical kit (a home office/NAS), a UPS adds ride-through as well as protection.
