Is it actually worth switching all our old bulbs to LED, or is that overhyped?

We still have a mix of old halogen spots and a few incandescent bulbs, and I keep being told to "switch everything to LED."

  • Is a full LED retrofit genuinely worth the cost?
  • How much do LEDs actually save vs the old bulbs, and how fast does it pay back?
  • Anything to watch out for — dimmers, colour, quality?

Trying to decide whether to change them all at once or just as they blow. (Separate from the glow-when-off issue — this is about *cost*.) Worth it?

Short answer: yes, an LED retrofit is one of the clearest, fastest-paying upgrades there is — LEDs use roughly 80-90% less energy than old incandescent bulbs and far less than halogen spots for the same brightness, and they last many times longer, so you save on both the electricity AND the constant replacements. Where you have lots of halogen downlights (big villas often have dozens burning 50W each), swapping to LED is a genuine, visible bill saving with a short payback. The catch is doing it RIGHT: match brightness (lumens, not watts), pick the colour temperature you actually want, use good-quality lamps, and if you dim, use LED-compatible dimmers/lamps.

Why it's worth it: - The saving is large per bulb: an LED replacing a 50W halogen might use ~5-7W for similar light — that's the ~80-90% cut. Multiply by a villa's worth of downlights burning for hours and it's real money off the bill. - They last far longer: many times the life of halogen/incandescent, so you also stop constantly replacing blown bulbs (and climbing ladders). - Payback: because the per-bulb saving and the lamp count are both high, a halogen-heavy home usually pays back the retrofit quickly — the more you run them, the faster.

Do it right (this is where people go wrong): - Match by LUMENS, not watts — buy the brightness you want; "60W-equivalent" tells you the light output. - Pick the colour temperature deliberately — warm (~2700-3000K) for living spaces, cooler for task areas — so it doesn't feel like an office. - Quality matters — cheap LEDs flicker, buzz, shift colour or die early; decent ones don't. - Dimming: use LED-compatible (dimmable) lamps on LED-rated dimmers, or you get flicker/buzz.

All-at-once vs as-they-blow: - The heavily-used lights (and any halogen) are worth doing now — that's where the saving is. - Rarely-used bulbs can wait until they fail; no rush.

Common mistake: buying the cheapest LEDs and hating the light (harsh colour, flicker) or under-/over-lighting the room. Choose lumens + colour + quality, and for a big retrofit or anything hard-wired, an energy-efficient lighting upgrade by an electrician gets it done cleanly. Did the whole villa's halogen downlights to LED and it was one of the few "energy saving" things that actually showed up on the bill — we had dozens of 50W spots running every evening, and cutting each to a handful of watts adds up fast. The bonus nobody mentions is not being on a ladder replacing blown halogens every few months. Buy decent ones and match the warm colour, though; the first cheap batch we tried were a horrible cold blue and flickered. Right lamps, right colour, real saving.

The lumens-not-watts point is the one that trips people up — they buy a "100W equivalent" expecting a specific brightness and get something different. Check the lumens and the Kelvin (colour), and if any circuits are dimmed, get dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer or you'll be back on the flicker thread. Prioritise the lights you actually run for hours; those pay back fastest. The rarely-used ones you can just replace as they die. Quality LEDs have got cheap enough that the maths is easy now.
