My electricity bill is high even with the AC off — what else is quietly eating power?
Even in the cooler months with the AC barely on, our DEWA bill stays higher than I'd expect.

Short answer: with the AC out of the picture, the non-cooling bill is usually a mix of ALWAYS-ON standby ("phantom") loads and a few thirsty appliances running longer than you think. Standby power — everything that's "off" but still drawing (TVs/AV, set-top boxes, game consoles, chargers, routers, microwaves with clocks) — is commonly estimated at around 5-10% of a home's electricity, quietly, 24/7. On top of that, an old inefficient fridge/freezer, water heaters left on all day, a pool pump running long hours, and old halogen lighting are the big non-AC draws. The wins: kill needless standby, run water heaters and pool pumps on timers, and replace the oldest, always-on inefficient kit.
The non-AC culprits, ranked by what usually matters: - Water heater(s) left on 24/7: heating and re-heating a tank all day is a real, steady load. A timer/on-demand use (heat before you need it, not round the clock) cuts it noticeably. - Pool pump hours: pumps are power-hungry and often run far longer than needed — right-size the run time (and consider an efficient/variable-speed pump). - Old fridge/freezer: an ageing unit can use far more than a modern efficient one, all day every day — often the best replacement payback. - Standby / phantom load (~5-10%): TVs, AV, consoles, set-top boxes, chargers, routers — each small, but always on. The water heater timer was our biggest non-AC win by a distance — ours had been heating a tank 24/7 for no reason, and putting it on a timer so it's hot for mornings and evenings only made a visible dent. Worth walking the house asking "what's on right now that doesn't need to be" — the answers surprised us.
Apartment version: no pool or villa water tank, so for us it was mostly standby and an old fridge.
