I want a 7kW EV charger but already run 3 ACs — will my villa's supply cope?
Planning to fit a 7kW home EV charger, but our villa already runs three ACs, a pool pump and a big kitchen, and I don't want to bolt on a big new load and start tripping the main or cooking a cable.
- How do I know if my existing supply / distribution board can actually take an EV charger?

Short answer: don't assume — a 7kW charger is a big continuous load, so before fitting one you (or the installer) should do a proper LOAD ASSESSMENT: add up your existing maximum demand (ACs, pump, kitchen, water heaters) against your supply's rated capacity and the board's spare ways, and see whether there's genuine headroom for another ~32A continuous circuit. If there is, it's a dedicated protected circuit off the board. If there ISN'T, you have two routes: upgrade the supply/board (bigger job), or fit a charger with LOAD MANAGEMENT — a current sensor on the incomer that automatically throttles the charger when the rest of the house is drawing hard, so you never exceed your capacity.
How to know if your supply copes: - It's about maximum simultaneous demand, not the charger alone. Your three ACs + pool pump + kitchen already pull a lot on a hot evening; a 7kW charger adds ~30A on top. The question is whether your supply rating and main board have room for that peak. - A load assessment (a real thing a competent electrician does) totals your connected/likely-simultaneous load and compares it to the supply capacity and the board. It tells you: spare capacity, or not. - The board needs a spare way and the incomer/main protection must be adequate — you don't just tap the ring.
If there's NOT enough headroom: - Load management / dynamic load balancing: a CT clamp on the main measures total draw and tells the charger to reduce or pause when the house is near its limit, then resume — so the EV charges without ever tripping the main. This is often the neat answer for a busy villa and avoids a supply upgrade. - Or upgrade the supply/board if you want full-speed charging plus everything else at once.
Common mistake: fitting a fast charger on an already-loaded villa with no assessment, then getting nuisance trips or, worse, an overloaded cable running warm. Do it properly: the charger install itself must be DEWA-approved (that's not optional here), and the smart move is to have a licensed electrician assess your supply and board capacity first and spec either a dedicated circuit or a load-managed charger. The load-management option is exactly what I was missing — I'd assumed it was "upgrade the whole supply or nothing." A charger that senses the incomer and backs off when the ACs are hammering means I can charge overnight (when cooling's lower anyway) without touching the supply. Getting the assessment done first so I know whether I've got headroom or need the managed unit is the plan. Cheaper than blindly upgrading, and no nuisance trips.
We added EV charging to a big villa that had already grown a lot (extra ACs, pool) and the electrician's first job was profiling the load — turned out one phase was already carrying most of it, so where the charger went mattered as much as whether it fit. Worth remembering on a three-phase villa it's not just total capacity but which phase you hang it on. The assessment surfaced all that; fitting blind would've made an existing imbalance worse.
