Earthing (grounding)

Earthing (grounding) is the safety connection that links the exposed metal parts of your electrical installation and appliances to the ground, giving any fault current a safe path to earth instead of through a person. If a live wire touches a metal casing, good earthing lets the current flow to earth and trips the protective device — the RCD or MCB — cutting the power before it can shock someone. It's the invisible backbone of electrical safety: an RCD works WITH earthing, sensing current that leaks to earth and disconnecting. Poor, missing or corroded earthing is genuinely dangerous — it removes that protection, so a faulty appliance can make a metal case live with nothing to trip. This is why appliances 'leaking to earth' trip the RCD, and why earthing is never something to bodge. Checking and correcting earthing is strictly a licensed electrician's work.
