High-pressure switch (AC safety cut-out)

The high-pressure switch is a safety cut-out on the high-pressure (discharge) side of an air conditioner or chiller that shuts the compressor off if the refrigerant pressure rises too high, protecting it from damage. In the UAE it's a common reason an AC cuts out on the hottest afternoons and restarts when it cools: on a peak-heat day the outdoor condenser can't reject heat fast enough, so the high-side pressure climbs until the switch trips; as evening cools and pressures fall, it resets and runs again. The switch itself is doing its job — the real fault is usually whatever stops the unit shedding heat: a dust-caked condenser, blocked airflow, an overcharge, or non-condensables. So repeated high-pressure trips aren't a reason to bypass the switch (never do that); they're a signal to clean the condenser and check the refrigerant charge.
