Reversing valve (heat-pump 4-way valve)

Also called: reversing valve, 4-way valve, four-way valve, heat pump valve, changeover valve

A reversing valve (or 4-way valve) is what makes a heat pump able to both cool and heat: it physically reverses the direction the refrigerant flows, swapping which coil is the hot one and which is the cold one, so the same unit that cools you in summer can run in reverse to heat in winter. Most UAE air conditioners are cool-only and have no reversing valve — you only find one on heat-pump models (used where winter heating or heat-pump water heating is wanted, or in cooler emirates/nights). Because a heat pump moves heat rather than burning energy to create it, it's a more efficient way to heat than a straight electric element, which is why heat-pump water heaters can cut the running cost of hot water. When a reversing valve sticks or fails, the unit gets stuck in one mode or won't change over cleanly — a specialist repair, not a DIY part.
