SWA cable (steel wire armoured)

SWA (steel wire armoured) cable is cable wrapped in a layer of steel wires under the outer sheath, giving it mechanical protection and an earth path that ordinary cable doesn't have. It's the cable of choice for sub-mains, outdoor and buried runs, and feeds to heavy or distant loads — an outdoor AC condenser, a water pump, a villa's garden supply or an annexe — where a standard cable would be too vulnerable to damage. The armour must be properly terminated with the correct glands at each end so it's mechanically secure and, where used as the earth, electrically continuous, a common defect is a badly-made gland that leaves the armour doing neither job.
