Feature or textured wall finishes — what are the options, and which hold up in Dubai homes?
Doing up our villa and I'd love a feature or textured wall or two. I keep seeing options — Venetian plaster, microcement, textured paint, wood/3D panelling, decorative wallpaper — and I can't tell them apart on what matters.
- What are the realistic options, and roughly how do they compare on cost?
- Which actually hold up in Dubai (humidity, cleaning, kids) vs looking tired fast?
- Any that are a regret here?

What lasts here: - Microcement and Venetian plaster are the durability winners — seamless (no peeling edges), wipeable, and fine with humidity once properly sealed, which matters in this climate. They cost more and need a skilled applicator (a bad application is where the money's wasted). - Panelling looks great and lasts if the material's decent and sealed — just be wary of cheap MDF in humid/wet zones. - Textured paint is the budget option — fine for a low-traffic accent, but it dates and scuffs. - Wallpaper — gorgeous range, but pick a type rated for humidity and keep it off genuinely damp walls (and fix any damp cause first, or it'll peel).
Biggest regret to avoid: a premium finish applied badly (Venetian/microcement live or die on the applicator) or wallpaper over a damp/uneven wall. Replying to myself with where we've landed: microcement in the living feature wall (loved that it's seamless and wipeable with kids around) and we nearly did wallpaper in a bathroom until someone warned us about the humidity — switched to a sealed plaster finish instead. The applicator point is real; we saw a botched Venetian job at a friend's that looked patchy, so we paid for someone with a proper portfolio. Day-one it all looks good; the difference shows a year in and in the wet/humid rooms.
Budget angle: textured paint is the cheap way to get an accent wall and it's fine in a bedroom or low-traffic spot, just don't expect it to look premium or last like plaster. Where people waste money is wallpaper in the wrong room — a humid or occasionally-damp wall and it lifts at the edges within a year. So spend where it counts (living feature wall, wet areas → the tougher sealed finishes) and save on the low-traffic accents. And whatever you pick, the wall prep underneath is half the result.
