Wallpaper or paint for a feature wall in Dubai — does wallpaper actually survive the humidity?
I want a feature wall and I'm torn between wallpaper and paint. My worry is Dubai's humidity and AC — I've heard wallpaper can peel at the edges or grow mould behind it here.

Short answer: both work in Dubai IF you match the product and prep to the wall — the failures you've heard about are almost always poor surface prep, the wrong wallpaper type, or hanging it on a damp/cold wall, not "wallpaper doesn't work here." Modern VINYL (or non-woven vinyl) wallpapers are moisture-tolerant and wipeable and do fine on internal, dry, well-prepped walls in the UAE — the classic paper wallpapers are the ones that lift and stain in humidity. The real risks here: hanging wallpaper on a wall that has ANY damp/condensation issue (it traps moisture and you get mould behind it), poor edge adhesion (lifts at seams/corners near AC drafts), and skipping the wall prep (clean, dry, sealed/primed, smooth). PAINT is the safer, lower-risk default for most walls — easier to touch up, no seams to lift, and with a washable/anti-mould emulsion it copes with humidity well; it just doesn't give you pattern/texture. Use wallpaper for a considered FEATURE wall on a sound dry internal wall; use paint everywhere moisture is a factor or you want easy maintenance.
Vinyl wallpaper vs paint: - Durability/moisture: vinyl wallpaper is wipeable and moisture-tolerant on dry internal walls; paper wallpaper is not — it lifts/stains. Paint (washable/anti-mould) copes well and is easy to refresh. - Cleaning: vinyl wipes; quality paint wipes; both fine. - Removal/change: paint wins — repaint anytime. Wallpaper is more work to strip and redo. - Look: wallpaper wins for pattern/texture/depth on a feature wall; paint is plain (or use a decorative/textured finish).
The UAE-specific rules: - Never hang wallpaper on a wall with a damp or condensation issue — fix that first (you'll grow mould behind it). - Prep is everything: clean, dry, filled, primed/sealed, smooth. Most lifting = bad prep. - Watch AC-draft corners for edge lift; good adhesive + prep handles it.

We have vinyl wallpaper on one feature wall in the apartment and it's been perfectly fine for a couple of years, no lifting or mould. The key was the installer insisted the wall was bone dry and properly prepped first. My friend put paper wallpaper in a bathroom-adjacent wall and it lifted and got mouldy within months, so the "type + location" thing is real. For the rest of the flat we just use a good washable paint because it's so easy to touch up scuffs. I'd say wallpaper for ONE considered wall, paint everywhere else.
The mould-behind-wallpaper risk is the one to take seriously. If a wall ever has condensation (external wall, behind furniture, near a cold bridge), sealing wallpaper over it traps the moisture and you get black mould you can't see until it's bad. We only wallpaper internal, dry, well-ventilated walls now. Paint with an anti-mould additive has been more forgiving for us in the humid months. Removal is the other thing people forget, repainting is trivial but stripping old wallpaper and re-prepping is a proper job. Feature wall in wallpaper, yes; whole humid room, no.
