Gypsum (drywall) partition walls — how do they compare to block, and do they block sound?
We want to divide a space (office and at home) and I'm looking at gypsum/drywall partitions instead of block walls.
- How do gypsum partitions compare — speed, cost?

Trying to partition properly without a flimsy, noisy result (a *wall* partition — different from a gypsum false ceiling). What should I know?

Short answer: gypsum (drywall) partitions are FAST, relatively cheap, and non-structural — a metal-stud frame with plasterboard both sides — and they're the standard way to divide offices and reconfigure homes without the mess and load of block. The big question is SOUND, and the answer is: a basic single-board partition blocks little, but a properly built one blocks a lot. Soundproofing comes from mass + insulation + decoupling: fill the cavity with acoustic insulation, use DOUBLE (or denser/acoustic) board on each side, seal all the edges/gaps (sound leaks through gaps), and for serious isolation use resilient/staggered studs. So the honest answer is "as good as you build it" — spec it for acoustics if privacy matters; a bare single-skin partition will indeed let sound through.
How they compare to block: - Speed + mess: far quicker and cleaner to build than blockwork, and easy to run services (cables, small pipes) inside. - Cost: generally cheaper than block for a non-load-bearing divider. - Weight: light — no heavy load added, good in apartments/fit-outs. - Non-structural: they divide space; they don't hold the building up (and moving one is much easier later).
Do they block sound? (This is the whole question) - Basic single-board, empty cavity: blocks little — you'll hear conversation through it. This is the "flimsy and noisy" version people complain about. - Properly built for acoustics — blocks a lot: - Acoustic insulation in the cavity (mass + absorption). - Double-layer or acoustic/dense board each side (more mass = less transmission). - Seal every edge, gap and penetration (sockets, skirting, perimeter) — sound leaks through the smallest gap. - Decouple (resilient bars or a staggered/twin stud frame) for serious isolation (bedrooms, meeting rooms).
What's involved: - Metal (or timber) studs at set centres, plasterboard each side (single/double), insulation in the cavity, then taped, skimmed and painted. Moisture-resistant board in wet areas; fire-rated board where required.
Where each makes sense: - Gypsum partition: dividing offices, creating rooms/storage, reconfiguring a home fast and cheaply, running services inside — spec the acoustics to the privacy you need. - Block/solid wall: where you want maximum sound/robustness, wet-heavy areas, or a wall that'll take heavy fixings — though a well-built partition covers most needs.
Common mistake: building a single-skin, no-insulation partition between rooms that need privacy, then hearing everything — or not sealing the edges. Build it for the acoustic performance you actually need, with insulation, the right board and sealed edges, via a gypsum and partition specialist. "As good as you build it" is exactly right. Our first partition was single board, empty cavity, and we heard everything — rebuilt it with acoustic insulation, double board one side and sealed edges and it's a different world. The sealing bit is underrated; sound pours through the gaps at the skirting and around sockets. For an office meeting room or a bedroom, spec the acoustics from the start rather than discovering it's paper-thin. Fast and cheap to put up, yes, but don't assume "wall = private." Insulation + mass + sealing is what buys you quiet.
We used gypsum partitions to reconfigure and it was quick, clean and much cheaper than block — great for non-structural dividing and you can hide cables in them. Just be honest about sound: a basic one won't give you privacy, so where it mattered (bedroom, study) we paid for insulation and double board and it's genuinely quiet now. Moisture-resistant board near the bathroom, fire-rated where needed. The flimsy reputation comes from cheap single-skin jobs; built properly they're solid and quiet enough. Match the spec to whether it's just dividing space or actually needs to block noise.
