Can a gypsum ceiling actually soundproof against the neighbours upstairs, or is that a myth?
We can hear footsteps and noise from the apartment above.

Short answer: a properly-built acoustic ceiling can meaningfully REDUCE noise from upstairs, but a plain gypsum false ceiling on its own does very little, and acoustic FOAM/panels are the wrong product for this — so set expectations correctly. The key thing to understand: there are TWO different problems. ABSORPTION (foam, acoustic panels) reduces echo/reverberation WITHIN your own room — it does NOT block sound coming THROUGH the ceiling from the flat above. ISOLATION (soundproofing) is what stops transmission, and it needs four things working together: MASS (heavy, dense layers — e.g. two layers of dense/acoustic plasterboard, not one thin sheet), DECOUPLING (mounting the new ceiling on resilient bars or isolation hangers/clips so it does NOT rigidly touch the structure above — this is the biggest lever for footstep/impact noise, which travels through the structure), ABSORPTION in the void (acoustic mineral wool filling the gap), and SEALING every gap and edge (sound leaks through the smallest gaps — around edges, lights, vents). And the honest bit: footstep/IMPACT noise is the hardest to kill from below (ideally it's tackled at the floor above), so aim for a big REDUCTION, not silence.
Two different things (the key confusion): - Absorption (foam/acoustic panels): cuts echo inside your room — does NOT block noise from above. Wrong tool for this. - Isolation (soundproofing): stops transmission — this is what you need.
What a sound-reducing ceiling needs (all four): - Mass: dense layers — e.g. double layer of dense/acoustic plasterboard, not a single thin sheet. - Decoupling: hang the new ceiling on resilient bars / isolation clips so it doesn't rigidly touch the structure — the big lever for footstep/impact noise. - Absorption in the void: acoustic mineral wool in the gap. - Seal everything: gaps around edges, downlights, vents leak sound — seal them (downlights are a classic weak point).
Realistic expectations: - Expect a strong reduction, not silence — especially for impact/footfall noise (best solved at the floor above). Airborne noise (voices/TV) responds better.
Common mistake: hoping a normal false ceiling or a few foam panels will block upstairs noise — they won't. Build a proper mass + decoupled + insulated + sealed system, and let a gypsum and acoustic ceiling specialist spec it. We did an acoustic ceiling under a noisy upstairs neighbour and it made a real difference to voices and TV, less so to heavy footsteps (which apparently come through the structure). The installer used resilient bars, two layers of dense board, mineral wool in the void, and sealed everything including the downlights. He was upfront that impact noise is the hard one and best fixed on their floor, which we couldn't control. So manage expectations — it's a big reduction, not total silence. The foam-panels idea I'd had was completely wrong, those are for echo inside a room, not blocking the neighbours.
The decoupling and sealing points are the ones that matter most from what we learned. A ceiling screwed straight to the slab just transmits the sound; hanging it on resilient/isolation fixings so it floats is what cuts the impact noise. And every downlight hole or gap is a sound leak, so a fully sealed build with proper acoustic detailing beats a heavier but leaky one. Mineral wool in the void plus mass plus decoupling plus sealing — miss one and it underperforms. Also worth telling people early that footsteps are the toughest and you rarely get to silence from below alone.
