Cove lighting / gypsum coving — what's involved and is it worth doing?
We like the look of cove lighting (the hidden LED strip in a recessed gypsum cove around the ceiling) and gypsum coving detail.

Short answer: cove lighting is a recessed gypsum "trough" (the cove) built around the ceiling perimeter that hides an LED strip and throws soft, indirect light UP onto the ceiling — it's a gypsum/false-ceiling job plus the right lighting, and it's genuinely worth it for a warm, high-end feel. What separates a great cove from a cheap-looking one is: EVEN light with NO hotspots or scallops (achieved by the right strip density, the correct distance/depth of the cove, and a diffuser), a good-quality LED strip in a colour temperature you actually want (and dimmable if you like), and clean gypsum work (straight lines, smooth finish, no visible strip or wiring). It works perfectly with a false ceiling — in fact it's usually built as part of one — but the electrics (driver, switching/dimming) must be planned in first.
What's involved: - The gypsum cove: a recessed channel/trough is formed around the ceiling perimeter (or a feature), sized and shaped so the LED sits hidden and washes light up/out. Built as part of the gypsum false-ceiling work, then taped, skimmed and painted. - The LED strip + driver: a quality strip mounted inside the cove, wired to a driver and to switching/dimming — planned with the electrics before the gypsum closes up.
What makes it look good (vs cheap/DIY): - Even, hotspot-free light: the strip's LED density (enough LEDs so you don't see dots/scallops), the right depth and distance from the ceiling face, and a diffuser give a smooth wash. Cheap sparse strips or a badly-proportioned cove show scallops and dots — the tell of a bad job. - Colour temperature you want: warm (~2700-3000K) for a cosy look; pick deliberately, and dimmable if you want mood control. - Clean gypsum: straight, crisp lines, smooth skim, no visible strip, wiring or joins. - Quality strip + driver: so it doesn't flicker, colour-shift or fail early (and is repairable/accessible).
Worth it + planning: - Worth it for the soft, layered, premium feel it gives a room — a favourite finishing detail. Plan it with the false ceiling and the electrics together (driver location, switching, dimming) so it's built right, not retrofitted awkwardly.
Common mistake: a cheap sparse strip in a badly-proportioned cove (scallops, dots, uneven), or not planning the driver/dimming, so it looks DIY. Spec a good strip + diffuser + correct cove geometry, and have a gypsum and finishing team build the cove and coordinate the lighting. Anyone got cove lighting that came out smooth and even — what strip/depth worked?
The hotspot/scallop thing is the whole game — our first attempt used a cheap low-density strip too close to the ceiling and you could see every LED as a dot, which looked awful. Redone with a denser strip, the right cove depth and a diffuser and it's a smooth, even wash now, totally transformed the room. Plan the driver and dimming before they close the gypsum; retrofitting is a pain. It's a lovely finishing touch when done well and a giveaway of a cheap job when done badly. Spend on the strip and get the geometry right.
Worth it for the "premium" feel, yes, but only if the gypsum and the strip are both good — I've seen coves with wavy lines and visible dots that cheapen a room rather than lift it. Build it with the false ceiling, plan the electrics (driver, switch, dimmer) in advance, use a quality warm dimmable strip and a diffuser. Even, hidden, warm light = expensive-looking; dotty, uneven, cool-white = DIY. It's a detail that rewards doing properly and punishes cutting corners. Get someone who's done a lot of them to show you examples first.
