Why does my electric water heater keep losing performance — is it the element or the anode?

My electric water heater takes longer to heat and runs out faster than it used to. I've read about the heating element scaling up and an anode rod that protects the tank.

  • What do the element and the anode rod actually do?
  • Why do they fail — especially in Dubai's hard water?
  • Is replacing them worth it vs a whole new heater?

Trying to understand what's going on inside the tank before I decide. What's actually happening, and what's the sensible fix?

Short answer: two parts explain most water-heater decline. The HEATING ELEMENT does the actual heating; in hard water it furs up with limescale, which insulates it, so it heats slower, works harder and eventually burns out. The ANODE ROD is a "sacrificial" metal rod that corrodes INSTEAD of your tank — it protects the steel tank from rusting, but it wears away over a few years and, once gone, the tank itself starts to corrode. Replacing a scaled element and a spent anode is cheap and sensible on a sound tank; a rusted tank means a new heater.

What each does and why it fails: - Heating element — the electric element that heats the water. In the UAE's hard water it scales up with limescale; scale insulates it, so it takes longer to heat and runs the element hotter until it fails. A slow-to-heat, runs-out-fast heater is the classic scaled-element sign. (De-scaling or replacing the element restores it.) - Anode rod (sacrificial anode) — a rod of reactive metal that corrodes in place of the tank. It's the tank's protection: as long as the anode is being eaten, the steel tank isn't. But it's consumed over a few years and, once spent, the tank starts to corrode from the inside — which is what eventually kills a heater (and causes leaks).

Replace vs new heater: - Sound tank, scaled element / spent anode → replacing the element and anode (and de-scaling) is cheap and worth it — it restores performance and buys years. - Tank already corroding/leaking (anode long gone) → that's terminal; a new heater is the call. (This is the repair-vs-replace crossover.)

The UAE angle: hard water accelerates both — scale on the element, and it's why servicing (checking/replacing the anode, de-scaling) matters here. Fitting a softener slows all of it down. Get a licensed plumber to check the element and anode before you write off the heater. Anyone extended a heater's life just by replacing the anode?

The anode rod is the part almost nobody knows about until their tank leaks. I replaced a slow, tired heater's element and anode instead of the whole unit and got years more out of it for a fraction of the cost — the tank was still sound. The key is checking the anode BEFORE it's fully gone, because once it is, the tank corrodes and then you're buying a new heater anyway. In this water it's basically a wear item. Cheap insurance if you catch it in time.

Makes sense of why heaters here seem to fade — it's the scale on the element making it work harder, plus the hidden anode quietly being eaten. Good to know a slow/weak heater on a sound tank is often a cheap element-and-anode job rather than a replacement. And that the anode is the thing standing between the water and your steel tank rusting through. Definitely checking that before assuming the whole unit's done — sounds like a much cheaper route if the tank's still good.
