AC pipes sweating and dripping in the ceiling void — is re-insulating old pipework worth it?

Up in the ceiling void and on the runs to the outdoor unit, the insulation on my AC pipework is shot — cracked, crumbling, and in a few places the pipe is basically bare. The bare/poorly-insulated sections are sweating, and one spot is actually dripping onto the ceiling below (which is how I noticed — a faint damp patch).

I can see the water problem, but I'm trying to work out if there's a bigger, invisible cost:

  • Am I losing cooling (and paying for it on DEWA) through bare/poorly-insulated AC pipes?
  • Is having the pipework re-insulated genuinely worth it in the UAE, or is it a nice-to-have?
  • Is the sweating/dripping just annoying, or is it doing damage I should worry about?

Before I get someone in, I'd like to understand whether this is a "must fix" or a "whenever." For anyone who's had AC pipework re-insulated — did it make a noticeable difference?

Short answer: bare or degraded AC pipe insulation is a genuine, quiet money-loser in the UAE — and the dripping makes it a must-fix, not a whenever. You're losing cooling through the bare pipe AND risking water damage; re-insulating pays back on both.

What's actually happening, and why it matters:

  • Cooling/energy loss: those pipes carry the cold refrigerant (or chilled water) between units. Bare or cracked insulation lets that coldness bleed into the hot ceiling void — so you're literally paying to cool the ceiling space, and the system works harder to deliver less cold to the room. In UAE heat the loss across a long, poorly-insulated run is not trivial.
  • The sweating/dripping is the bigger red flag: a cold pipe in humid air with no insulation condenses water on its surface (just like a cold drink can), and that water drips into the ceiling — which over time stains, feeds mould, and damages gypsum and finishes. That damp patch you found is the warning; left alone it becomes a ceiling repair, not just an insulation job.

So: worth it? Yes, and I'd treat the dripping section as prompt. Re-insulating with proper closed-cell insulation stops the condensation, stops the drip, and recovers the cooling you're currently losing — it's one of the better-value AC jobs precisely because it fixes an energy leak *and* a water leak at once. Get AC pipe insulation done properly (right thickness, sealed joints) rather than a patch of tape over the worst bit. Common mistake: taping the one dripping spot and leaving the rest bare — the condensation just moves to the next exposed section. Do the run, not the symptom. Anyone measured a DEWA difference after re-insulating a long run?

Had exactly the sweating-pipe damp patch and ignored it too long — it turned into a gypsum ceiling repair on top of the insulation job, so learn from me and don't wait. Once it was re-insulated properly the dripping stopped completely and the room felt like it cooled a touch quicker (hard to prove the DEWA saving, but the comfort was noticeable). The water-damage avoidance alone justified it; the efficiency was a bonus. Definitely a "fix it" not a "whenever," especially the dripping bit.

From the ceiling/finishing side: by the time you see a damp patch below, the void has usually been wet for a while, so check for mould and softened gypsum up there when the insulation's redone, not just the pipe. If it's been dripping a while you may need a small patch-and-repaint below as well. Best case you've caught it early and it's just the insulation; either way, sorting the pipe first (so it stops wetting the void) before making good below is the right order — same as any leak, fix the source then the finish.
