How long should an AC last in the UAE, and when is it cheaper to replace than keep repairing?

Our AC is getting on and needs another repair, and I'm wondering whether we're throwing money at something we should just replace.

Short answer: an AC in the UAE works harder than almost anywhere, so while units are often quoted at ~10-15 years, heavy year-round use here can bring that down — and the replace-vs-repair call comes down to a few clear signals rather than age alone. Replace (don't keep repairing) when: it needs REPEATED/expensive repairs, it runs on an OLD refrigerant that's being phased out (so gas and parts get scarce and costly), a major part like the compressor has failed, it's clearly costing more to run than a modern efficient unit, and it no longer cools properly however much you service it. Keep repairing a relatively young, efficient unit with a one-off, cheap fault. The rule of thumb: if the repair is a big fraction of a new unit's cost — or it's the third repair in a row on an old, thirsty machine — replace.

How long they last here: - Often cited ~10-15 years, but UAE use is brutal (long hours, high heat, dust), so real life can be shorter, especially if servicing was neglected. Age is a factor, not the whole story.

We kept repairing an old unit out of "it still sort of works" inertia — new capacitor, then a fan, then it needed gas on an old refrigerant — and when we finally added it up we'd spent a chunk of a new unit's price AND had high bills the whole time. The efficiency gap is the hidden cost: the old one was thirsty compared to the inverter we eventually fitted. The refrigerant point is real too; once the gas is obsolete, keeping a leaky old system alive is a losing game. Do the honest sum before the next repair.

The way I frame it across units: if a repair is more than roughly a third to a half of replacement, and the unit's old and inefficient, replace. You're not just buying reliability, you're buying a lower monthly bill, which an old unit quietly costs you every month it runs. One cheap fault on a newish efficient unit, fix it. A pattern of faults on an old thirsty one on obsolete gas, replace and stop the bleeding. Take the emotion out and price the two paths over a couple of years, not just today's repair quote.
