My AC runs all day and never switches off — is that normal, or a sign something's wrong?
My (non-inverter) AC seems to run constantly and rarely switches off, even once the room feels cool. This is the opposite of the short-cycling problem people describe — mine just never stops.
- Is an AC that never cycles off normal in peak UAE summer?

Trying to work out if this is just "it's 45°C outside" or an actual problem I should fix. How do I tell?

Short answer: on the hottest UAE afternoons a healthy AC running almost non-stop can be completely normal — it's simply working flat-out against 45°C, and a fixed-speed unit that's correctly sized for a brutal day may barely cycle off. BUT if it runs constantly AND can't actually hold the set temperature (the room never quite gets there), that points to a fault: undersized unit, dirty coil/filter, low refrigerant, or cooled air leaking away. The test is whether it's KEEPING UP or falling behind.
Normal (don't worry) if: - It's peak summer, and the unit holds the room at a reasonable temperature while running a lot. Long run times on the worst days are expected — and actually efficient (no wasteful cycling, similar to how an inverter deliberately runs continuously).
A problem if it runs constantly AND: - Never reaches the setpoint / room stays warmer than set → it can't keep up. Causes: - Dirty coil or filter — the classic; restricts heat transfer/airflow so it runs forever and still underperforms. Cheapest to check. - Low refrigerant (a leak) — reduced capacity, runs non-stop chasing a temperature it can't hit. - Undersized unit for the room's heat load (big glazing, west sun) — a correctly-sized unit should hold the room on a normal hot day; if yours never can, it may be too small for the load. - Lost cool air / poor insulation — leaky ducts or an uninsulated room bleed the cooling away. - Thermostat fault — not sensing/satisfying correctly.
How to tell which: put a thermometer in the room. If it holds a sensible temperature while running lots → normal for the heat. If it can't get the room down to the setpoint no matter how long it runs → get it checked; start with the filter/coil, then charge, then whether it's sized/insulated for the load. Running flat-out and failing costs you on the bill and wears the compressor, so it's worth diagnosing. Is yours holding the temperature or losing the battle?
Good distinction. Mine "ran constantly" one summer and it turned out to be a filthy coil — once cleaned, it cooled properly and started cycling off again on all but the hottest afternoons. So constant running that CAN'T hold the room is your clue it's working around a problem. But I've also had a correctly-sized unit just run most of a 46°C day and keep the room fine — that's normal and actually fine for the bill. The "is it keeping up or not" test is the right one; check the cheap stuff (filter/coil) first if it's losing.
Apartment owner — mine ran non-stop and stayed a couple of degrees too warm all summer, and it was a combination of a tired unit and honestly the west sun cooking the living room. A correctly sized unit and better shading made a big difference. So it's worth being honest about the room's heat load too — a small unit in a glazed, sun-facing room will run forever and still struggle, and that's a sizing/heat-gain issue as much as an AC fault. If it's holding the temperature though, sounds like it's just doing its job in the heat.
A seasonal note now the peak is passing: if your AC ran flat-out all day through the worst of the summer and never cycled off, that was often the system simply keeping up with extreme load rather than a fault, especially if a dirty coil or filter was making it work even harder. As the weather eases it should start cycling normally again, and if it does, that confirms it was load, not a broken thermostat. This is the ideal window to get the coil and filter cleaned and the operation checked while you are not desperate for cooling, so it goes into next summer able to actually reach temperature and rest, rather than running itself into the ground on day one of the heat. If it STILL never switches off even now in milder weather, that points to a genuine fault (thermostat, sensor or a real capacity problem) worth chasing properly.
