Casement, sliding or tilt-and-turn aluminium windows — how do I choose the right type?
We're specifying new aluminium windows and there are different opening types — casement, sliding, tilt-and-turn.

Short answer: the opening TYPE matters as much as the material, and the right one per room comes down to ventilation, cleaning access, how well it seals, security and the space it needs to open. The three main aluminium types: CASEMENT (hinged, opens outward like a door) — simple, good ventilation, seals well when shut, but the sash swings out so it needs clearance and isn't ideal on a walkway/balcony edge. SLIDING (panels slide horizontally past each other) — takes ZERO opening space (great where a swing would obstruct, e.g. balconies, tight spaces, big openings), but a slider only ever opens HALF the window for ventilation and traditionally seals a little less tightly than a casement/tilt-turn (modern good-quality sliders are much better). TILT-AND-TURN (the versatile one) — TILTS inward at the top for secure trickle ventilation (great for airflow without a wide-open window, and secure to leave ajar), OR TURNS fully inward like a door for full opening and — key benefit — EASY CLEANING of the outside from inside (a big deal at height), plus excellent sealing and security; the trade-off is it opens INTO the room so it needs internal clearance. For our climate and dust, sealing and easy cleaning matter, so tilt-and-turn is a strong all-rounder; sliders win where space is tight or the opening's huge; casements are the simple economical choice where a swing-out is fine. Whatever the type, the GLAZING spec is what drives heat and noise: at minimum insulated double glazing, ideally with a low-E coating for our sun, and a thermal break in the frame.
The three types (trade-offs): - Casement (hinged, opens out): good ventilation, seals well, economical — but needs external swing clearance. - Sliding (slides horizontally): no opening space needed (balconies, tight spots, big openings) — but only opens half for airflow and traditionally seals a touch less (good modern ones excepted). - Tilt-and-turn: tilts for secure vent OR turns fully in — easy exterior cleaning from inside (huge at height), great sealing + security; opens into the room (needs clearance).
Glazing (drives comfort): - At least insulated double glazing; ideally low-E for the sun + a thermal break frame.
Pick by room: - Tight space / balcony / big opening -> sliding. Airflow + easy cleaning + best seal -> tilt-and-turn. Simple + external clearance OK -> casement.
Common mistake: choosing the type on looks/price alone and then finding a casement swings over a walkway, or a slider gives poor airflow/cleaning access. Match the type to the room's use and the glazing to the climate, and let an aluminium windows and fabrication specialist spec it. Which type did you end up choosing, and why?
We went tilt-and-turn for most of the apartment mainly for the cleaning — being able to turn the window fully inward and clean the outside from inside is a massive deal several floors up. The tilt position is great for a bit of secure airflow overnight too. We used sliders on the balcony where a swing-out would've been in the way. Casements only where clearance wasn't an issue. Agree the glazing spec is where the comfort really comes from; the low-E double glazing made a noticeable difference to heat. Choose the type per room, don't just pick one for the whole place.
The sealing point is worth stressing for dust. A well-sealed casement or tilt-and-turn keeps fine dust and noise out better than a basic slider, which matters here. Sliders are unbeatable where you can't have anything swinging into a space though, and for very large openings. Tilt-and-turn's dual function is genuinely useful once you live with it. And yes, spend on the glazing, low-E plus a thermal break in the frame is what stops the heat and condensation, the opening type is about how you use it day to day. Match both to the room.
