Aluminium or uPVC windows for a Dubai villa — which is actually better here?
Choosing new windows and it's aluminium vs uPVC frames.

Trying to choose window frames I won't regret in a few years (frame material, separate from double-glazing or seal questions). Which holds up here?

Short answer: both work in the UAE, and the choice is a trade-off. ALUMINIUM is strong, slim, durable and takes the sun/heat well (and suits big spans and modern looks), but bare aluminium conducts heat, so for insulation you want a THERMAL-BREAK aluminium frame; a good powder-coated finish handles the sun and, done right, the coast. uPVC (plastic) is naturally a better insulator and needs little maintenance and is often cheaper, but it's bulkier, limited on very large spans, and cheaper uPVC can discolour/become brittle under intense UV over time if it's not a quality, UV-stabilised product. So: aluminium (thermal-break) for strength, big openings, slim modern frames and durability; quality uPVC for insulation and value on standard sizes — and specify for the sun (and salt if coastal) either way.
The trade-offs: - Aluminium: - Strong & slim: handles large panes/spans and gives a slim, modern sightline. Durable and dimensionally stable in heat. - Insulation caveat: bare aluminium conducts heat, so for thermal performance choose a thermal-break frame (an insulating barrier in the profile) — otherwise the frame undoes some of your glazing's benefit. - Finish/coast: a proper architectural powder-coat resists UV and, correctly specified, coastal salt; holds colour for years. - Cost: often higher, especially thermal-break. - uPVC: - Better natural insulator and low maintenance (no painting), often cheaper. - Bulkier frames and limited on very large spans; less "slim modern." - UV caveat: cheap, non-UV-stabilised uPVC can discolour/yellow or get brittle under intense sun over years — so quality (UV-stabilised) product matters here.
Where each makes sense (Dubai): - Aluminium (thermal-break): big openings, sliding/large spans, slim modern frames, maximum durability — with a quality powder-coat for the sun (and salt near the coast). - uPVC (quality/UV-stabilised): standard window sizes where insulation and value matter most and you don't need big spans or the slim aluminium look.
Coast/salt: - Near the sea, specify for salt whichever you choose — properly-coated aluminium or quality uPVC, with corrosion-resistant hardware — and maintain it.
Common mistake: buying bare (non-thermal-break) aluminium and wondering why the frames feel hot / undercut the glazing, or buying cheap uPVC that yellows and warps in the sun. Match material to span, insulation need and budget, insist on thermal-break aluminium or UV-stabilised uPVC, and have an aluminium and window specialist spec it for the climate. The thermal-break point is the one people miss with aluminium — we nearly bought standard aluminium for the modern look and the specialist steered us to thermal-break so the frames didn't just conduct the heat straight in. Went aluminium for the big sliding spans and slim frames, powder-coated for the sun, and no regrets. A friend did quality uPVC on standard windows for the insulation and value and it's been fine too. The bit that matters is not buying the cheap version of either — bare aluminium or non-UV uPVC is where the regrets come from. Spec it for the climate.
Looks and spans pushed us to aluminium — uPVC frames are chunkier and couldn't do the big openings we wanted the slim look on. But for standard bedroom windows where insulation mattered more than looks, quality uPVC would've been a sensible, cheaper call. Coastal salt is the other factor if you're near the water; whatever you pick has to be specified and maintained for it. Thermal-break aluminium with a good powder-coat, or a quality UV-stable uPVC — either holds up; it's the cheap versions that fail in this sun. Choose per window, not one rule for the whole house.
