Handyman versus a specialist trade in Dubai, when is a handyman enough and when do you need a licensed pro?
I can never tell when a handyman is fine versus when I actually need a proper licensed tradesperson in Dubai. For small jobs a handyman is quick and cheap, but I don't want to have someone unqualified touch something that matters. Where's the line, what's genuinely fine for a handyman and what should always go to a licensed specialist? Trying to make sensible calls and not overpay or under-qualify.

It's a useful line to get right, and it's mostly about risk. A handyman is ideal for small, mixed, low-risk work: mounting and fixing things, minor carpentry, sealing, touch-ups, assembly, swapping a like-for-like light fitting or tap washer, jobs where one person and one visit is the efficient answer. Where you want a licensed specialist: anything electrical beyond a simple like-for-like swap (new circuits, the board, anything into the wall), gas, major or concealed plumbing, and any structural or waterproofing work, because those are the things that shock, leak, or fail expensively if done wrong. The test I use: if the job can cause a leak, a shock, a fire or a structural problem, it's a licensed trade, not a handyman, regardless of how small it looks. For the genuinely small mixed stuff, though, a handyman in Dubai is the sensible, cost-effective choice. Match the risk to the qualification and you won't over- or under-pay.
This is exactly how we split it. Handyman for the endless small stuff, mounting, sealing, little fixes, and a licensed electrician or plumber the moment it's a circuit, gas or a real leak. We learned it after a cheap 'fix' to a socket that an electrician had to redo properly. Small and cosmetic, handyman; anything risky, pay for the licence.
